Baroque music
Today, I’ll write about one of the classical music style “baroque”
Baroque music was made between 1600 which was theater music started to compose, and 1750 which was Bach dead. It is said that the word “Baroque” came originally from Portuguese “Barocco” and it means “distorted pearl”.It is said that people call this style of music “baroque” because people who loved the Renaissance period didn’t like this style of music. But this word started to be used from the past century, so we don’t know if it is true.
How did “Baroque period” started?
In the late 16th century especially in Italy, the population that wanted to express their feelings frankly increased so much, and in place of renaissance music style, the musicians who lived in Florence created a new style of music “monody” which was suited to making dramas. Most of the baroque music is played with low sound, and people sing like talking to audience. And at that time, the composers who lived in Florence broke fresh ground named “Opera” too. And as soon as they composed it, “baroque music period” started.
A few years later, baroque music style had a profound influence around every country in Europe, and it was getting improved with different ways in each country. For example, in Italy, many composers made like Opera songs which can express their feelings freely using some instruments like violin and recorder, and later, it developed into “sonata” and “concerto”. But on the other hand in France, they didn’t express their feeling too much, and maintained emotional balance using viola, flute and so on, and it improved with a different way.
People didn’t want to express their passion but expressed the perfection of religious beauty and so on objectively. But compared to Classical music, baroque music wasn’t enough beautiful and harmonic. So some people say that baroque was in the runup to classical music.
Who is the famous composer in this period?
There are many famous composers in this period, but especially Vivaldi and Bach are one of the most famous composer.
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born in 1678 in Venice, Italy. In this period, he composed about 450 concertos and he is the first composer who created this style of music. on the other side playing the violin, he was also a music teacher at the orphanage in Venice for 40 years. He is famous for using a lot of instrument in his songs. For example, “The Four Seasons” which was made by him in 1725, is the one of the most popular song in baroque period. He used the violin, the viola, the cello, the double bass, and the cembalo in this song.
Johann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685 in Eisenach, German. It is said that he was the composer who became the top in baroque music. He respects the traditional, and he also put new style of music and his idea in it.
It is also said that “Bach was best known during his lifetime as an organist, organ consultant, and composer of organ works in both the traditional German free genres such as preludes, fantasias, and toccatas, and stricter forms such as chorale preludes and fugues. He established a reputation at a young age for his great creativity and ability to integrate foreign styles into his organ works.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Sebastian_Bach Searched on 10th February)
